Today, we have a real treat to share with you. Kristine Bender, owner of K. Rose Cakes, is here to tell us about her delicious and beautiful cake baking. It makes me hungry just reading the sweet words of Kristine! Yum! Her designs are both beautiful, sophisticated and delicious. Without further ado…
What is your culinary background and how did you get into the industry?
I am a self-taught pastry chef. I have always been interested in baking and after becoming fascinated with the pastry shops in Scotland, I decided to work in a pastry kitchen at a DC restaurant. I soon became the pastry chef at Olives and later at Citronelle. I decided to bring my baking skills to wedding cakes where I could combine my love of pastry with design.

What are the different types of cakes that you bake?
I bake several different cakes paired with fillings such as May Day Cake, which is buttermilk cake with a pastry cream and whipped cream filling and sliced fresh strawberries. I also do a sour-cream chocolate cake with vanilla buttercream and whole raspberries. In addition to the menu I have created, I also do custom flavors for couples.

How can couples best convey their design ideas to you?
It is best if couples come to a tasting with some ideas about the direction they would like to go in with their wedding cake. Colors and flowers are always helpful to me when designing a cake with a couple. Any inspiration and motifs that may be incorporated into the wedding day may provide some ideas for the cake as well.

What is the most unique cake that you have ever created?
The most unique cake I have created was for a magazine. The cake was a light blue with a special bird nest cake topper with two vintage dove birds. The cake was also decorated with white sweet peas and a striking anemone.
