A Conversation with Nick Perez of Multiflor

The best floral arrangements are those that surprise and delight you.  I love looking at an arrangement and thinking, “How unique!” instead of simply “How pretty!”. This is exactly the reaction you will get with Multiflor- they are contemporary and so interesting, yet simple at the same time. Hear more from Nick, Multiflor’s Owner and Lead Designer…

How would you best describe your overall floral style at Multiflor?

Personally, my taste runs very minimalist. I trend towards clean lines and architectural elements but there are times I prefer to see a more natural, highly textured look that has organic qualities.

What are a few of the most unusual and striking flowers that you love to use?

My favorite flowers to work with are not so much flowers per say as much as “elements”, including mosses, grasses, pods and berries.  Of course it’s hard not to love working with beautiful peonies, orchids and so many of the other less exotic blooms.

What trends are you noticing for the summer season? What flowers or plants would you love to recommend to our readers that you believe are under-utilized?

The summer time is a great opportunity to take advantage of local products, including coxcomb, and zinneas (especially the green and orange color). It’s the perfect season to indulge in vibrant flowers that are long lasting and fun.

For those of us who don’t know a lot about flowers (besides that they are beautiful and smell so fresh) what is a small guide for us to understand the pricing behind different types of flowers?

First, flowers are commodities that fluctuate in price, sometimes drastically depending on various factors. The biggest consideration in price is determined by simple supply and demand, thus the higher cost during the holidays.

Other important factors that determine the price of a particular flower are exchange rates (particularly the dollar against the Euro, where most of the worlds’ flowers are bought and sold. Climate (rain in California may create a shortage in a particular product and then the law of supply demand takes over) and lastly, transportation cost are also major components that influence flower cost.

We hope you keep enjoying fresh flowers as the DC weather gets warmer! If you have any questions or would like more information, leave a comment or contact Multiflor- we love to hear from you!
