Behind the Scenes with Sweet Root Village

November 11, 2016

This past week we had the opportunity of talking to the amazing ladies of Sweet Root Village- Rachel and Lauren. They shared with us some awesome insights about themselves, their inspiration, and some beautiful images that can get anyone excited about fall florals.

1. How did Sweet Root Village start?
A few glasses of wine and discussions of our creative passions and what the future holds lead to considering starting a blog and trying it all out! A few clients later and we were launching our business and had no idea that we would be where we are today: six years later, with two more amazing full-time team members, in an awesome warehouse space, working with tremendously wonderful people every day!
2. Where do you get your inspiration from?
A lot of little things. Sometimes from nature and architecture and what we see around us in the every day. Sometimes a new variety of flower that we are unfamiliar with inspires a whole lot of new thoughts. An excited client with a vision that brainstorms with us lets us dream big. A really interesting vessel. Challenging installations and dreaming up mechanics. All kinds of things! It changes all the time and we love that every day and every event isn’t the same.
3. How do you make every event different from one another?
Our clients really make all the difference. They are all their own people with different likes and dislikes! Vessels, accents, greens, flowers, venues, seasons, and designs are always coming to us in different combinations. Some elements might be similar here and there, but each event is easy to make it’s own when we get to know the client and what seems to reflect them and their day best!
4. What makes SRV so special?
This always feels like the type of question that should be answered by someone who isn’t us! It’s hard to be introspective about this type of thing since we are most familiar with our flaws and our shortcomings. But we’ve been told that our professionalism, organization, and our drive to only make and bring the best are pretty special. We definitely put our hearts into every arrangement and we prefer to have a good time in the studio and onsite at weddings. We do our best to bring a lot of fun into what we do. It’s good to be yourself and to be real with people and that’s always our goal in the day to day.
5. What is your favorite part about the job?
So many favorites! A studio filled with flowers is definitely high on the top of favorites. Seeing a happy bride once we’ve delivered her florals and setup a wedding makes all the effort worth it. Succeeding and meeting our goals is one of the best feelings. And honestly, getting to work with people we love in a place we love that’s full of sunlight and opportunity! It’s easy to take it for granted, but it’s so important to remind ourselves that we really have the best job and we wouldn’t change it for the world!
6. What is your favorite flower?
Lauren’s favorite is a daffodil. Rachel’s is probably hellebore at the moment. Joy’s favorite is queen anne’s lace. And Rachele’s favorite is a tulip!

Pretty Little Napkins

September 16, 2016

Napkins can be a total game changer when it comes to table settings; they can add color, texture, and a personal touch to the table landscape. A pretty pattern, a spin on place cards, or a pretty ribbon around a napkin can really be the center of attention of your table design. We gathered some of our favorite images of beautiful and original ideas showing how napkins can be incorporated into your special day. Enjoy!

Let’s Blow this Popsicle Stand

July 29, 2016

The summer heat is on full blast here in the District, and we’re craving a sweet way to cool down!  Boozy popsicles are popping up everywhere this summer.

Outdoor cocktail hours can be brutal on guests during the dog days of summer.  Surprise your guests with a custom popsicle stand!  Rather than a typical signature drink, your guests will love these refreshing, frozen cocktails.  Extra points for including a personalized popsicle stick joke!

We can’t wait to try these tasty new flavors.

Sweet Caroline + Ryan! – Classic Washington, DC Wedding

July 20, 2016

No better way than to start wedding Wednesday…this gorgeous classic wedding is just perfect and we love hearing about it directly from the bride…

Both of us knew right away that most importantly we wanted all our friends and family dancing all night. To do this we knew we needed to hire an amazing band and jump start the night early with something that would get everyone on their feet. After thinking for a while we decided that we would swap the father/daughter dance with the mother/son dance because Caroline and her Dad were planning on kicking into ‘Sweet Caroline’ half way through their song. Sweet Caroline is something Caroline and her Dad dance to at any family event where there is dancing and it is also the famous 7th inning stretch for the Boston Red Sox which is the home team for Ryan’s entire side of the guest list. That choice got everyone excited and onto the dance floor, where they stayed for the entire night! Success!

Favorite Details: After Ryan found the church, St. Joseph’s on Capitol Hill, we had the idea of mimicking the starry ceiling from St. Joseph’s and projecting a starry night sky onto the ceiling at the Mellon.  We thought a starry night would really capture what that time of year is about! Our September Starry Night was everything we wanted and more!

Florals and Inspiration Behind the Big Day: Design wise we thought for a long time about what is a signature September look? Since early September still feels very much like summer we knew we wanted the wedding aesthetic to be classic and clean with a lot of creams, whites and crisp greens.

Aimee and Cindy from A. Dominick Events helped us form this ‘crisp and clean’ vision even further into the design for the floral, linens, place settings and more! Throughout the process they really understood what we had in mind and what we were trying to build.

When we stepped into the reception space we were blown away with how everything we wanted was translated perfectly at the Mellon.

Our September Starry Night was everything we wanted and more!

Not Goodbye!

May 31, 2016

A letter to DW:

As I sit down to write this letter, I can’t help but reflect back on my introductory post – which seems like forever ago! While most is still true, a few things have changed:

  1. I knew I had a strong passion, but didn’t realize I would continue to fall more in love with it daily.
  2. I have now worked alongside all of you amazing DC vendors and am constantly blown away by your talent, energy and creative minds.
  3. I knew I wanted to learn, but I now understand the importance of listening, emerging yourself and being overly eager to engage yourself with other like-minded people.

I’m not going to lie – I didn’t TRULY understand what I was getting myself into when Jeannette asked me to take on this amazingly fun load of responsibility with her. The past few years with District Weddings have been more than I could have imagined. The relationships made, late nights and early mornings, endless albums of eye candy + constant overload of inspiration are only something that can be enjoyed first hand.

It is with a full heart, I am excited to announce that my southern roots are calling me home. I will be taking off on two exciting new journey’s and I hope that each of you will follow along!

Thank you District Weddings, for allowing me to share my passion with all of you! To all of the creative individuals who make up this unbelievable industry – keep shining! You truly are all one of a kind. To my Occasions family, I do not have enough room to tell you how amazing you are, but you know I will write it in a book. Thank you for teaching me, emerging me and giving me wings! To Ms. J, thank you for this opportunity. You are my rock, my brain and my constant joy.

Xo,

Alex
