Hiring a Planner…

Today, Kimberly tells us how she found the perfect planner to guide her through her wedding planning…

Reality has finally set in that I’m working full time and trying to plan a wedding. YIKES! I am suddenly very overwhelmed. In my heart I might want to plan my entire wedding, but the reality is I don’t have enough energy (or time) to do so. Images from the show “Bridezillas” run through my head. I make a mad dash to the computer to begin researching wedding planners. Here are some things I learned and might help you should you choose to enlist the help of a planner:

For every bride there’s a planner – Are you more hands on and want less help with your wedding? Hire a month of planner. Looking for someone to take care of every aspect of your wedding? Full service is the way to go. In short, no matter what level of service you’re looking for, there is a planner to help.

A planner is more affordable than you might think – All planners are not created equal. Some charge a percentage of your entire wedding budget, others charge one flat fee based on the services you want. Once you know what type of help you want, you will be able to find a planner that fits comfortably within your budget.

A planner often can actually save you money (and time) – Planners have an endless network of contacts, which saves you time from having to research if they are a fit for you. A planner puts you in touch with vendors that work for your budget. She might also be able to negotiate pricing and upgrades on your behalf and extend her discounts which saves you money.

Interview, Interview, Interview (don’t forget references too!) – It’s not as easy as you think to find a planner you like, but will also share “your vision” of your wedding day. Don’t hesitate to interview as many planners as it takes to find the one that best represents you and what your day will be about. A good planner should happily provide references not just from brides, but from other vendors and outside sources so you have lots of opinions to consider.

Finding my planner has been akin to finding “the dress”. It might be the first one you try on; it might be the 10th. However, once you find it, you just know. During one of my interviews, something happened. The person I was sharing my thoughts with tossed out a fabulous idea – something that I wanted to possibly explore, but hadn’t yet shared in the meeting. Once she said it, I looked at her, and smiled. She “got” me and the look I wanted. I had found my planner.

Aimee Dominick of A. Dominick Events has agreed to help me plan one of the most important days of my life. I’m glad Aimee will by my side and share my journey down the aisle. I’ll take this moment now to thank her for helping me make decisions that will allow my day to be everything that I have ever imagined!

The Quest for the Perfect Wedding Cake…

Today Bride Blogger Kerry shares her delicious quest for the perfect cake…

Dessert is very important to us.  (That might contribute to why my fiancé and I are currently on a rigorous exercise program.)  But nonetheless, wedding cake was high on our priority list.  And, I am a big believer in creating a priority list with your fiancé to decide what aspects of your wedding you most want to focus on…and spend the most money.

There were several attributes we were looking for in a cake vendor.  We wanted a cake designer who was a whiz with buttercream (we’re not big on fondant), and had a per-guest cost of around $5.  I inquired about having a different flavor on each tier — we wanted to mix things up and offer guests a choice.  And each tier had to involve chocolate, but each in a unique and delicious way!  So after reading a ton of online reviews of area cake bakers, I scheduled us for a handful of tastings.

Cake tasting is probably the most fun you can have on a cold December weeknight after a long day at work.  And our tastings went from one extreme to the other.  At one, we sat at a woman’s kitchen table tasting tiny bites of cake while her dogs ran circles around us.  At another, we were seated at the “wedding table” in the café of a fancy bakery and served huge slices of cake as families looked on, most likely in awe of our gluttony.

Finally, we had a tasting with Fluffy Thoughts at the home/studio of the owner, Lara Stuckey.  My fiancé, maid of honor, and I sat there in cake heaven, enjoying every single bite.  Lara had prepared what looked like tiny loaves of each cake flavor and a full palate of fillings, buttercreams, ganaches, and fresh fruit.  She recommended various combinations of each to try.  I experimented with chocolate chip cake dipped in coconut buttercream, raspberry curd, and dark chocolate ganache, and it was fantastic.

What sealed the deal was that rather than attempting to freeze the top cake tier for your first anniversary, Fluffy Thoughts prepares a brand new cake identical to your top tier for each couple one year later…for free!  Since then, we put down our deposit with Fluffy Thoughts and cannot wait to finally taste our dream cake.  However, we are keeping the flavors a mystery for now!

Washington DC Wedding Venue Search

Today, Bride Blogger Kimberly tells us how she found her perfect venue…great advice on how to find the right “spot”…

Location.  Location.  Location.  My mission – find a reception location close to St. Matthew’s Cathedral.  Since two-thirds of the invited guests are from out of town, it was important that the ceremony and reception be close to one another. One of the last things I need to worry about are out of town guests trying navigate around a city that is already confusing in broad daylight!

You never consider how many places there are to have a wedding until you start planning one!  Historical sites, restaurants, museums and hotels are just a few of the many options you have. Looking for special amenities?  That is also something to consider when choosing a venue.  On my wish list – someplace close to the church, a place that gives me undivided attention, and last but not least, options for me so my guests can have an experience they will never forget.

Bride Blogger Update: Venue

Today, Kerry catches up with us to share how she booked the perfect venue for her 10/10/10 wedding…

Not long after Chris and I got engaged and were basking in the bliss of telling everyone we knew and hearing “congratulations” left and right, we knew we had to get to work and make some plans!

We are both more or less locals of Northern Virginia.  We grew up visiting our grandparents who lived a mere three miles from each other, and we were even born at the same hospital!  Having lived here off and on our whole lives, we knew we wanted to get married here.  The question was WHERE.  There are so many beautiful hotels, historical sites, and other potential venues that we were definitely overwhelmed at first.

However, a few things helped us narrow down our choices.  We had already decided that we wanted to get married on October 10, 2010 because of the rarity of having such a memorable date-10/10/10!  We also knew that we needed a venue that would hold at least 150 guests.  Chris and I are both “only” children, but we have huge extended families. (Incidentally, our mothers are both from families of seven children!)  So with those things in mind, we set about contacting venues for walkthroughs.  We knew we had to act fast in order to secure our date before all of the other 10/10/10 couples beat us to it!

With our parents at our side, we visited seven sites – two in DC, two in Alexandria, and three in Loudoun County.  Some felt too formal and a bit cold for our taste.  And a few just did not have that “wow” factor we were looking for.  However, when we visited George Washington’s River Farm in Alexandria, we both just kind of knew that we had found our place. River Farm once belonged to George Washington and sits high on a hill overlooking the Potomac River, just like Mount Vernon.  It is now the home of the American Horticultural Society, so its extensive gardens and row after row of flowers make the estate even more beautiful.  Even as we first walked up the path to the house, my head filled with visions of all the amazing wedding photos we could take there.

Bride Blogger Update: The Ultimate Virginia Welcome Bag

There are few things I love more than putting together a fabulous welcome bag to kick off a wedding weekend!  Okay, I do also love fabulous stationery, incredible floral arrangements, gorgeous shoes…but, welcome bags are definitely one of the items at the top of my lust list.  Today, Julia shares with us about her finds as her final post as a single woman…

District Weddings has a great blog post about Virginia/DC themed welcome baskets written by another former bride blogger.  I used a lot of the ideas from Sarah Christine and added a few of my own.

I wanted our bags to reflect “Virginia.”  Both my fiancé and I have been in Virginia since age 3 and 5, so we consider it home.  After an extensive search of the internet (which was NOT filled with helpful information) I found this great resource.  It is a list of all of the companies and contact info of products made in Virginia. Go here and click “Made in Virginia Products” to download the PDF.

We ended up with:

Hubbies Virginia Peanuts, Route 11 chips, Chesapeake Bay Seasoning, Virginia water from Wegmans, VA is for Lovers Postcard, Honey made in Clifton, Capitals pen & decal (ok, not from VA, but we’re fans!), aspirin (ok, also not from VA, but a necessity!), a box of chocolates and a schedule for the weekend.
