With cupcakes shops on every corner these days, it was a refreshing change to hear about Pie Sisters, D.C.’s fantastic new pie shop. We were lucky enough to chat with Erin, one of the three sisters and co-owners of Pie Sisters about all things pie…
Growing up sisters Alli, Erin and Cat were extremely close. Ever since their mom taught them to bake at a young age, the trio had always talked about going into business together. After college each of the sisters began different careers and moved to different parts of the country and the world, including Cat who spent time in Iraq working for the state department.
After finally finding themselves back close to home in D.C. the three decided to open a bakery together. After ruling out the overdone cupcake shop they decided on pie because “it’s something everyone can relate to” according to Erin.
Even though the shop has been open for less than a year it is a huge hit. Every day Pie Sisters bakes hundred of pies, some days even receiving orders for 300 pies before opening their doors. With three different pie sizes, there is something for every customer. Pies are perfect for a variety of events. Large pies with monogrammed pie crust can be cut into slices or cuppies, individual sized pies, in a several different flavors make great take always.
In addition to the many sizes, a variety of flavors, all utilizing seasonable, gourmet ingredients are available. Some of the seasonable flavors include Jumble Berry, a four berry mixture, and the ever popular Bourbon Chocolate Pecan, as well as classics like cherry and key lime pie. Keeping seasonality in mind is important when ordering pies far in advance, as not all flavors are available year round.
