Our day of expert interviews continues! Next up… David, the band leader of the Fabulous Fantoms — one of the most sought-after wedding and event bands in the greater D.C. area. Listen up — you will learn a lot!
From David…
How would you describe the style of the Fabulous Fantoms?
The Fabulous Fantoms are a variety band, meaning that we can cover material from the big band era right to today’s top hits. With our full instrumentation and multiple vocalists, we are able to recreate many different styles of music. That being said, we find upbeat music from the ’70′s, 80′s and current hits are what most audiences will respond to. Our goal is to have the dance floor full all night.
What should a couple look for when deciding on a band? Do you recommend they personally meet with a band member, or simply just listen to demos, visit a show, etc.?
When a couple are looking for a band for their wedding reception they should look for a group with experience at doing weddings and are familiar with the customs of all denominations. Although the couple might have fallen in love with a band they saw at a bar or club, they should look elsewhere for a group to play their reception. It is not just about the music. The bandleader needs to be adept at reading the crowd and how to enhance the flow of the evening. I always like to meet with perspective clients ahead of time and always recommend that they see the band live if at all possible.
Is there any room for negotiating when hiring a band?
In today’s economy I would most definitely negotiate when hiring a band. You might want to try to get a reduction on the price or have the band throw in an extra musician to cover the cocktail hour. The business has become very competitive and most band leaders are sensitive to the clients needs.
How many “new” songs will a band learn for a wedding?
Typically bands will learn at least one new song per event. In our case, I will try to do more if necessary. My band goes all out to make every wedding reception special for the bride and groom. They are our best advertisement.
Can a couple book a band directly or must they go through an entertainment booking company?
When shopping for a band, it is not necessary to go through an agency, although I highly recommend it. Dealing with a reputable agency such as Entertainment Exchange is a big plus. Not only can they show you bands that you might not be familiar with, but you are guaranteed that your band will be an established, professional unit.
Thanks so much, David! This information is oh-so-helpful!
