How did you become interested in make-up artistry and what is your background in the field?
I became interested in makeup artistry when I lived in Bolivia, South America where I had always been interested in fashion and beauty. I also studied cosmetology and makeup training in Brazil.
My background in makeup has been varied and wide ranging. I have worked not only with many brides but in film, television, video, stage, print and even high definition TV broadcasts for celebrities, royalty, political figures and high profile Washingtonians. All of which has contributed to my knowledge base and experience as a professional makeup artist for over 19 years.
Would you say that you have a signature style for doing make-up?
I have been known for creating a timeless classic beauty look. Brides have commented on my flawless finish, smooth and light coverage, and long lasting makeup application.
At the same time, most brides have a particular look in mind and my experience, skills and creativity allow me to make that happen.
For those women who don’t typically have a lot of time to spend on their make-up, what are your easy tips and tricks to create great looks?
One of the best tips I would give is to start with a clean basic foundation to even out skin tone. You can then double the use of that foundation by applying another layer on areas that may need more cover up, such as under the eyes, on brown spots, redness or any acne marks.
In the winter season, skin is dryer, so applying a little moisturizer over your foundation will help and add radiance. In the summer, use a talc free pressed powder over foundation to set the skin.
Bronzing powder is a great multi use product. It can be used as a blush, for contouring, or as eye shadow since most bronzers do not have any red or purple dyes for those with skin sensitivity. It is easy to blend and offers a rich eye color contrast.
As you are doing the make-up for the bridal gown models at the Decatur House, can you give us a ’sneak preview description’ of what you are envisioning for their bridal makeup?
I am envisioning clean, modern looks that are natural and very wearable and enhance the style of the bridal gowns. Different dresses and each individual models look will also dictate the makeup approach. There may be some where I use a more smoky eye makeup look or something more dramatic.
What the hottest trends in makeup artistry? What do you see becoming popular in the near future, and what new trends would you like to promote?
The hottest 2010 makeup trends call for more defined eyes with long lashes and a mix of different grey hues, silver, and bronze tones for shimmery eyes. This year is all about color. It seems that popular requests now are for more radiance on the skin, more emphasis on the eyes and redder semi matte lips.
Personally, I am becoming more involved with natural, eco-friendly makeup and would like to see that trend really blossom. As a matter of fact, I am researching into initiating my own line of eco-friendly, green wedding makeup and hair products that would offer a unique selection for women of all skin tones and ages.
