What’s in the West End of D.C., adjacent to the always darling Georgetown, and one of the top venues for a fabulous D.C. wedding? If you guessed the Fairmont Hotel, you were correct!

The Fairmont is a venue that is regularly featured on our site with real weddings because of its importance to the D.C. area. Today, we were able to do a short interview with Robert Mikolitch, the director of catering at Fairmont, and Jill Bagga, the catering manager, to ask them a few questions about what makes Fairmont such a special place.

District Weddings: What makes the Fairmont different than other venues to have weddings at?

Fairmont: The location and the design of our Hotel makes The Fairmont a very unique property for special events and state occasions in our nation’s capital. We are located at 24th & M, the gateway to Georgetown and the Potomac waterfront. There is no end to what our guests can do within walking distance to the Hotel.

As part of the iconic collection of Fairmont Hotels, we have a reputation for luxury and service that at the same time is very comfortable for our guests. Our special event spaces are what have created our reputation for memorable events.

The Colonnade Room, with its Jeffersonian-inspired architecture, opens out to the legendary Courtyard Garden. The Garden is what guests find to be the most unique feature of the hotel for a wedding. Because the Courtyard is landscaped throughout the year, it offers a picturesque view and setting regardless of weather and time of year.

Our Grand Ballroom features breathtaking chandeliers and floor to ceiling mirrored “windows”. The ambiance of the room is enjoyed by our clients who appreciate the fact that they have an elegant room to start with before considering décor.

DW: Tell us about your magical garden!

Fairmont: The Courtyard Garden is nicknamed our “urban oasis” and has been a part of wedding celebrations at the Hotel for 25 years. By day and by night, couples create memorable wedding photos in the Garden around the vintage fountain. Our very own cherry trees help create an authentically local addition to Spring at the Hotel. My favorite view of the Courtyard is at night, when you can see the Colonnade Room decorated and thematically lit for a party through the windows.

DW: What is your favorite dish that the Fairmont provides for weddings?

Fairmont: Chef Timm’s culinary philosophy is to secure ingredients from a 150 mile radius of the Hotel. We strive to source local ingredients whenever possible. Our rooftop beehives provide honey which we blend into our menus and our famous “Bee-tini” in the Loggia Bar. My (Robert) favorite dish would have to be our award winning crabcakes, no filler, all crab… such a great local dish.

DW: If you could say one thing about the experience that guests receive in coming to the Fairmont, what would it be?

Fairmont: I would have to say it’s our mission and pleasure to turn moments into memories. There are so many traditions during the wedding weekend that everyone will enjoy and remember, and we know will be a success, but it is the little details that our guests appreciate. One of our favorites is taking a picture of the bride and groom going down the aisle, then popping it into a frame and placing it on the night stand in the parent’s room before they evening ends.
